HouseKeeping Items

Hey Everyone,

A few housekeeping items here:

First, we will keep practice, for now, at Jonquil as we have parents with kids on different teams at the park. If we encounter parking and/or other issues we can always change later on in the season. So officially, practice is Monday evenings from 6-7 pm on Pitch 13 and it starts this coming Monday. I never received a practice schedule from the league so I'm not sure if there is another team before or after us on that pitch so please plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early in order to commence practice at 6pm sharp. This will ensure we get our full 1 hr slot if another team has practice at 7pm. Don't forget to get any gear you may need: sized 3 ball, shin guards, cleats or running shoes, hydration. Also, we will be doing small sided games (3v3/ 4v4) for the last half of each practice so bring both jerseys or like coloured t-shirts (white and yellow). This should only be for the first practice or two; apparently each team is getting their own penny's (a coloured jersey to wear over existing shirt).

I am still looking for a team administrator/manager. Please contact me if you are interested or would like to know more about what the position entails.

For information dissemination, is email and the club's website sufficient? There is the option to get a facebook page, twitter, etc. If you would like to see these social media platforms utilized please let me know.

Rain/inclement weather: We will try to contact everyone by email/phone but this isn't always possible so please check the website (smyrnasoccerclub.com) before heading out to practices and/or games. On the main page there is a window indicating field status. Usually it is updated by 4pm weekdays and 7-8am on weekends. If the field is showing closed then practice or a game is effectively cancelled. Our club basically rents the fields from the city of Smyrna and the city, not our club managers, makes the decision as to whether or not they want activity on the fields. We are aware of the excessive number of cancelled events last year; the board is in talks with the city to find a solution if we have continued bad weather.

Goal for your child, from my perspective: Allow your child to develop to their full potential in an enjoyable, challenging, and positive environment. This is copy-pasted from our new syllabus provided by GPS. If you weren't at the parents meeting, GPS is a company which SSC is utilizing to ameliorate our coaching and, in turn, your child's progression. Some of the objectives I am going to incorporate to meet this goal include:
-maximize player active time with the ball,
-Teaching the player the basic principles and fundamentals of the game,
-Teach the role, not the position (i.e., defender vs Left Back, Right Midfielder),
-create a deep and passionate for the sport and sports in general.

What this otherwise means is that your child is going to have fun, get better at soccer, develop good fitness, and hopefully, look forward to each practice, game, and upcoming seasons. We will not be focused on competition in terms of winning games, league stats, etc., as this is counterproductive at this age level.

For each practice, GPS has derived a detailed lesson plan which I will be following fairly closely. They look pretty awsome and very well thought out so I'm anxious to see how it works. I apologize in advance for any growing pains associated with the new program. I will try to send out an email each weekend to give a little heads up on what we are going to cover in the next practice as well as a review of the previous week's practice and game. GPS also provides video's for most of what we are going to cover so I'll try to send those out links for those as well as any cool clips of soccer in general to show your children.

That's it for now. I'll have another email out this weekend detailing our first practice. Please contact me if you have any questions.
